Happy Fourth Of July America!

Well, this is tough day when an American finds herself (and himself) not in America on the Fourth fo July. This is such a unique holiday and here it England it may as well be the 9th of April for all they care. I am homesick.

Bob and I loved being awoke last night from the happy (and maybe a bit tipsy) calls from my family missing us from the Lobster Pot in Bristol, RI. My dad was happy that his dinner tab was about half of last years, and they saw lots of lovely artwork going unpurchased by drunken revelers...well dad, save your money for next year - and thanks for the 1am call!

Yesterday the bomb threats in London came a little too close to home. I was driving with Megan and Rachel to Rachel's Sports Day (field day) out in the 'burbs when we sat in unmoving traffic for 30 minutes. Police and ambulences flew by and people everywhere were turning around and walking away from the direction we were headed. People were hitchhicking. Turns out there was a suspicous package found in the tube station we were near and many of the local roads had been closed. Over 8,000 people were effected by the one tube station closure and loss of bus service. We were late for field day - as were many others - it started 30 minutes late, with the only comment being "We will begin in 30 minutes, as the coach from the school has been delayed in traffic" Very business as usual.

We did make it to field day, and noticed many mitilitaty helecopters fly overhead. A bit sureal.

When I got home I heard that the police carried out a controlled explosion on what they found and that Heathrow was closed for 5 hours with a suspicious unmanned suitcase. There was no panic and no one beeped or lost their cool. Very civlized of course.

It makes the danger of these crazy extremest feel pretty real when field day is dealyed because of bomb threats and road closures and military helicopters fly over your track field. But it was amazingly calm. The girls are happily oblivious to it all, which is fine by me.

On more normal note, we brought the kids to the London Zoo last weekend with some new Connecticut GE transplants. The kids all got along very well and it was a fun day.

Next week at this time we will be in Madison - can't wait to wake up looking at Faulkners, taking my mutts for a walk and hopefully see all of you very very soon!

Love
Amy
